My Journey into Web3

I learnt about NFT's in January 2020, when I was introduced the Rarible.com and digital collectables. After making some of the stupidest purchases of my life (Grimes on Nifty Gateway 🤦♀️), and learning a lot about the space, I started investing in projects that I truly believed in. In Autumn 2020 I became part of the free mint for EtherOrcs, and this introduced me to the community side of the crypto space. Since then I have become an active member in multiple communities including RTFKT, EtherOrcs, Metashima and Plant-X.

The NFT space is the most vibrant, creative and innovative space in the design world right now. The blend of traditional art forms and fashion, with the possibilities that digital can offer are endless and we are only just getting started. The communities I am a part of are constantly pushing to create, build and innovate, and I am extremely excited to be a part of it all.

Kevin the Monkey

For 6 months I hung up my shoes as a UX consultant and illustrated a full generative art project with almost 500 individual traits. Everything was designed and hand drawn from scratch. All the assets had to be able to be layered one on top of the other to create a finished "Kevin" with a random combination of background, back item, skin, skin markings, tail, clothes, wrist, mouth, eyes, ears and head assets working together. There were also over 50 1 of 1 unique custom pieces, and outfit sets.

The project celebrated the most streamed track in musics history "Monkeys Spinning Monkeys" by Kevin MacLeod, and had a lot of fun parodying other NFT projects and crypto culture. Below are some of the 1-of-1's and examples of finished Kevins.

The Fafinettes Generative Art Project

For the last 18 months, world famous French street artist Fafi has been working on a generative art project to compliment her comic book "The Carmine Vault". The project comprises of one of the largest number of hand-drawn trait ever attempted. Over 1000 individual assets needed to work together seamlessly. My job has been to organise these assets, editing, amending, adding and preparing them to work in the multitude of 'sub collections' that will make up the full collection.

The main challenge to be faced with the artwork is the position of the body, with hair that sometimes falls over shoulders, and sometimes behind shoulders and how this works with other assets, like earring and head accessories, that sit within the hair. Also having one arm held behind the body and one on top has created its own set of challenges, when getting the layering of assets to work. This has highlighted how important it is to have a firm understanding of how generative art works during the initial stages of the illustration process.

Working closely with a Web3 developer I have used every trick that is possible to make the assets work as intended, including asset classes made of multiple layers, and sub asset classes, which will be shown under the same metadata tags.

From an illustration point of view I have had to learn to mimic Fafi's amazing style, so that I can change her original artwork where needed.

As a woman in Web3 I also feel proud to be part of this project which is run by a female team and highlights the strength of femininity, in a typically male dominated space.
